Abstract Art and Lines with Jackson Pollock
We learned about abstract art and lines by looking at Jackson Pollock's artwork
Abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures. We used straws to blow ink on the paper to crete different shapes. We then used watercolors to fill in those shapes.

Fall Landscapes
We learned about the artist Vincent Van Gogh, who is one of the most famous artists from the past. His most famous painting is Starry Night. We looked at how he uses brushstrokes to create a visual texture in his artwork. For our artwork similar to his, we created a fall landscape with chalk pastels. We used warm colors (red, yellow, orange).
Color
Pop Art Words
We learned about the artist Roy Lichtenstein, a pop artist. Pop art is art based on modern popular culture and the mass media. Roy Lichtenstein crated artwork that looks very similar to comics. He uses onomatopoeia to put emphasis on his artworks. He used primary colors, similar to the comic book style. Each student chose their own onomatopoeia word created action lines around the word to put emphasis on their word.
Value
Value is the light and darkness of colors. We see it all of the time, but never really notice them. Students arranged the colors in order from light to dark. Then they began with a simple hue and added white and black to the colors to make tints and shades for their artwork.

Calder is also known for creates mobiles and stabiles. We focused on balance for this lesson and created our own mobiles. Students had the choice to use metal hangers or paper plates, but they had to be sure their mobile would balance.
Self-Portraits with Frida Kahlo
For our self-portrait lesson, we studied Frida Kahlo. Frida is an artist of Mexican hertiage. When she was young, she was in a terrible bus accident that caused her a lot of pain. While she was bed ridden, Frida began painting. She was known for her self-portraits. Frida married another artist named Diego Rivera: together they were called the Elephant and the Bird because of their difference in size. Frida was known for emphasizing her dark hair, especially her unibrow, calling it "wings of a bird."
